Fra icis.com januar 2016Titanium dioxide Prices Q4 2015 Europe- European titanium dioxide (TiO2) contract prices were largely lower in the fourth quarter, particularly for standard grade product, which is typically used in the downstream paints and coatings sector. Prices have dropped successively over the past year in Europe on supply length. The price erosion continues despite Huntsman’s closure of its black-end TiO2 operations at Calais, France during the summer of 2015 for restructuring/cost saving reasons, as players said that the plant closure has not been sufficient to offset the oversupply. While there is some talk that double-digit price reductions were most realistic for the fourth quarter, this depended on starting point and end-sector. By contrast, drops in excess of €100/tonne were also heard for standard grade product in some cases. However, in terms of the actual numbers quoted on a gross basis, price drops of €100/tonne were seen to more closely reflect these levels, taking prices to €1.91-2.10/kilogram (KG) FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe). Lower prices were heard for domestic or imported product from Asia, but they were not seen to represent a general market level in Europe on a gross basis. Limited decreases and or rollovers were also heard in a few cases in Q4, albeit for part loads and in particular for specialty grade TiO2, such as in the plastics sector. Even though general availability remains good across the grades, players said that it is generally not as easy to switch suppliers for specialty grades, which therefore limited and/or prevented the downward price pressure for specialty grades in the fourth quarter. €1.91-2.10/kilogram = $2064-2269/tonn
